The prayer's origin is thought to be with the Desert Fathers, monks who settle in the Egyptian desert in the fifth century. The practice of repeating the prayer continually dates back to at least the fifth century. The earliest known mention is in the work of St. Diadochos of Photiki (400-ca.486), found in the first volume of the Philokalia. St. Diadochos ties the practice of the Jesus Prayer to the purification of the soul and teaches that repetition of the prayer produces inner peace, "Prayer of the Heart". Prayer of the Heart is ... "When mind and heart are united in prayer and the soul is wholly concentrated in a single desire for God, then the heart grows warm and the light of Christ begins to shine and fills the inward man with peace and joy." St. Seraphim of Sarov Prayer ropes have a written history since about the 6th century, called "Komboskini" in Greek and "Chotki" in Russian, but the prayer itself, the "Jesus Prayer" comes from the new testament. Though the Jesus Prayer has been practiced through the centuries as part of the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic tradition, in the twentieth century it also began to be used in some Western churches, including some Roman Catholic and Anglican churches. |
